FTP Server

What is an FTP Server

An FTP server is a program running on one computer that allows people on other computers to connect to it using an ftp client for the purpose of transferring files (in one direction or the other).
FTP server programs don't come as standard on windows computers.

They used to come as standard on linux boxes but now regularly do not.

They do come as standard on MAC OS/X but the method of starting and stopping it is a little awkward and requires an administrator password.
FTP server programs are typically always running on websites and are the primary method of publishing for most webmasters.

Because of this, vast numbers of people around the world have become familiar with FTP and wish they had an ftp server on their machine that they could turn on and off at will (or even configure as a linux daemon or windows service).

Our FTP server can be used as a normal program with a nice window-based control screen or it can be started in daemon mode (or as a windows service).

All ftp servers conform to a standard as defined by RFC765 and use a standard set of ftp commands, so if you have an ftp client on your machine and are used to working with FTP you find that you can connect up to any ftp server anywhere in the world.
FTP is a great way of backing up files across your office network.
FTP is a great way of transferring files from one of your home computers to another.
The built-in file sharing systems deployed on windows systems have a history of security holes and flaws and there have been many cases where people accidentally leave their home or office computer in an open state when their original intention was just to temporarily open up their machine for a one-off transfer.

FTP solves all of these problems.
